The Institute of History, Jagiellonian University of Kraków, hosted our fifth workshop. The keynote speech “Violence and Non-Violence in Eastern Europe and the USSR, 1988-1991” was given by Prof. Mark Kramer (Harvard University) who outlined the decision making process in Moscow and explained Mikhail Gorbachev's motivation to obstain from using force in Eastern Europe. By focusing on several crucial incidents in the first half of 1989 – e.g. the withdrawal of Soviet military units from Afghanistan or the massacre in Beijing – Mark Kramer highlighted how Gorbachev’s policies influenced the "peaceful revolutions".
The workshop´s aim was to discuss draft articles written by our PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows. The focus was on “Legitimacy and State Violence” and “Biopolitics and Education”.
